About this conference

This is the first regular international conference on Japanese philosophy organized by the International Association of Japanese Philosophy (IAJP).

Its aim is threefold: 1) to enhance the quality of research on Japanese philosophy, 2) to provide a stable international platform for Japanese philosophy, and 3) to reinforce the status of Japanese philosophy in academia. We plan further conferences to be held after this in different parts of the world.

As is well known, debates concerning the term, “Japanese philosophy,” have continued for many decades, which in many ways may refer to the philosophy of the Kyoto School. Many believe, however, that Japanese philosophy or philosophy itself is not, and should not be, confined to one particular school. Japanese philosophy as an academic discipline, therefore, should be opened up, in terms of its contents and methods. This conference welcomes proposals that are critical and insightful for challenging the study of Japanese philosophy by unveiling its potential as well as problematic through re-reading and reconfiguring the related philosophical texts and issues. This conference specifically encourages young scholars to submit their proposals. Topics may cover any periods, figure or context, including Japanese thoughts and intellectual history for instance, pertaining to Japanese philosophy in a broad sense.

IAJP

The International Association of Japanese Philosophy is an organization dedicated to promoting Japanese philosophy in its various aspects and dimensions. The group was conceived by the editors of the Journal of Japanese Philosophy published by SUNY Press; and the board of directors include members residing and teaching in Japan, Hong Kong, and the US. The purpose is to promote the field of Japanese philosophy by providing a space for scholars of the field to present, exchange, and publish their scholarship. The IAJP held its first meeting at the Eastern Conference of the American Philosophical Association in December 2014 and its second meeting was held also at the Eastern Conference of the APA in January 2016. The IAJP plans to continue holding meetings annually at the Eastern Conference of the APA in the US. This present conference will be the first IAJP meeting in Asia. The official language is English and Japanese.
